We live in an amazing era specially  when it comes to machine intelligence that bring artificial beings to a more autonomous state.

Machines are far more advanced then one might think. They are co-workers and not just tools.  Machines can communicate in an advanced way and be almost completely autonomous.

 

In the future, our world will become more and more automated. Machines will fill the public and private spaces and become a more significant part of our lives.

Good communication and  trust are both essential for the success of the human/machine relationship.

This relationship will be based on good communication that is a product of well designed "body language".  An autonomous machine of any kind will not be able to communicate only by sound;  physical gesture and movement will be needed to play a bigger role.  Most of the communication between people is physical and without any words.  Our face is a generator of endless  expressions and gestures.  

What is a face when it comes to a machine.  Does it need a human-like face?

This project is an experiment of movement and gestures that is artificial.  

With different materials, different approaches and different mechanisms  - it is possible  to create a basic arsenal that will lead to a development of "artificial body language" that will make many products a success.

THE FACE OF THE MACHINE - REALISM TO ABSTRACT

There is almost no doubt that autonomous machines will need to have a kind of "communication center" which people will talk and respond to,.  In other words - a face.

One approach is that it will be easier to communicate and trust an entity that is human-like.

THE MECHANICAL ARM - THE MOST BASIC FORM OF MECHANICAL MOVEMENT

This model is designed to test the capability of a simple robotic arm to preform in a more "emotional" way.  

AN ORGANIC MOVEMENT

In order to try and soften the movement and make it feel more natural, silicone was applied in all the joints of the model to use this flexible material like a soft tissue connecting a skeleton.

THE FUTURE - SOFT ROBOTICS

Soft robotics is said to be the future of the robotic industry.

The use of unconventional materials and mechanisms to create soft, flexible robots that are powered by air pressure opens a door to a fascinating possibility where robots will no longer move and "talk" to use in the traditional ways with motors and joints - they will become much more similar to living creatures and will change form and color in many other ways.
