1968 was an exceptional year in film history.  The release of "2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY" shook the world of film making, and marked a new era in the SCI-FI film industry.  The countless works of art  seen in the film inspired many artists of many disciplines to create  amazing works.

As an artist and a big fan of Stanley Kubrick and Stuart Freeborn, the makers of the film, I made a comprehensive research on the technique and craftsmanship that where used to make the magnificent and realistic apes in the "DAWN OF MEN" sequence.

The project consists of the knowledge gained from years of experience working with clay, silicone, crabon fibers and other advanced materials.  It is also based on the original techniques that were used in the original production for make up and spacial effects.

EcoFlex 0030 silicone

Spacial effects material for realistic skin applications.

Shetland wool

Punched into the silicone with a needle.

3D printed teeth

From an original chimpanzee 3D model.

Resculpted and cast in resin.

Crabon Fiber Underskull

Built as a jaw mechanism for an organic facial movement.

SmoothCast 300.

Cast in a silicone mold to make strong, lightweight teeth.

Sculpting has been in my DNA since childhood.  I have always been interested in the art of character design and spacial effects.

Learning from a master of character art brought me to come up with my own character design, based of the foundations and inspiration of Stuart Freeborn.

THE JAW MECHANISM

Wires attached to the Maxilla [upper jaw] and the lower jaw are connected to the upper and lower silicone lips.

Every jaw movement pulls the lips backwards and mimic the natural facial expressions of an ape.
